Sunday Column 13-08-2023
Do you think the government reads my column? Here is why. I wrote on July 16, 2023, that the Indian laws which were written by the British, need a rewrite. And lo and behold! The home minister Amit Shah did just that. He introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha yesterday to accomplish just that.
The three new bills, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill 2023, will replace Indian Penal code, the criminal procedure code and The Indian evidence act respectively. Now I do not understand law as such. Hence I am not in apposition to talk about the merits of these bills. That is for the legal experts to dwell and debate. But I am happy that we have started erasing the archaic British laws. I sincerely hope this is a step in the right direction.
I have been writing this column for the last few weeks. Last week was an exception due to unavoidable circumstances. One of my friends said to me that I am covering too many topics at one go. However, to me at least, this column is about the thoughts generated in my mind due to the happenings around. Hence there is a built-in randomness.
However much one tries to avoid commenting on politics, it is becoming impossible to do so. Because every news item, every small or big thing happening around is being politicised.
Everyone must have seen and heard the debate on no confidence motion, so there is nothing much left to comment on it. It is sad to see that both the ruling party and opposition using the parliament to further their own causes. From calling people names to blowing flying kisses towards the female MPs is not something India wants to see.
We are approaching our 76th Independence day. We have come a long way since 1947. India as a country has achieved a lot with a promise to do more. The average age of today’s India is 28 years. We can pin our hopes on the youth of our country to do all the right things. It is the duty of every elderly person to guide them towards the right path.
Today’s generation, me included, does not know what it is like to live under a foreign rule. I sincerely hope we never witness such a thing again.
In my own heart I have no doubt that we are on the right path. Let us march ahead and achieve more glory.
My best compliments to everyone on our 76th Independence Day!!!
